Businesses are highly interactive systems, in which each function influences the whole in many ways. Nothing is more useless than a function that has been highly optimized in isolation. Decisions about software systems today are either driven by standards such as CMMI/TQM/ISO, or norms such as good practice vs. bad practice, low-cost vs. high quality. Unfortunately, such approaches make no explicit strategic or value statement. The primary focus of my research "Value-Based Systems and Software Engineering (VBSE)" has been to connect engineering with an organizations' strategic core such that it delivers the expected values (more). |
SimVBSE is a 3D game-oriented decision support tool that allows people to reason about their choices in a simlauted environment. It caters to the many decision makers who are always faced with countless options and wonder if either of those is any better than the other. The simulated framework connects the various organizational elements such as the strategic core, environmental constraints, and structural orientation, with traditional engineering methods in a unifying decision framework (more).
